Grenache,
Ballard Canyon Estate, 2007
This second release of Grenache from our
estate vineyard is a classic blend in the tradition
of the great wines from the Rhone Valley. Contains
classic
Ballard Canyon aromas of cassis, ripe plums and blackberry.
This bottling is abundant with suggestions of nutmeg
and lemon blossoms as well as concentrated flavors
of ripe cranberries and dried cherries. This wine
is indeed
a food friendly wine.
Harvested in the early hours of the morning, the Grenache
grapes were fermented in small, one ton open top bins.
Punched down by hand as required each day to extract
all of the color, flavor and structure from the skins,
the new wine was gently moved into 100% French Oak
barrels, 33% of which were new, for sixteen months
of aging.
The winemaking team crafted a final blend of 96% Grenache
and 4% Syrah. The wine was bottled without filtration
on February 27, 2009 and allowed nine additional months
of bottle age before release. Just 75 cases produced.
